Upon its inauguration in 2022, the Yoon Suk Yeol government included “pursuing North Korea’s complete and verifiable denuclearization” to achieve sustainable peace in the Peninsula as one of its policy tasks.
In his celebratory speech for Liberation Day on August 15, President Yoon Suk Yeol proposed an ambitious and comprehensive initiative encompassing political, economic, and military support in case North Korea discontinues its nuclear programs. The President’s government also announced a comprehensive plan to normalize the US-North Korea relationship through diplomatic support, discussion on the reduction of conventional weapon systems, provision of food stuffs, agricultural technologies, medical services, and infrastructure, and financial and investment support. The government stressed that it would protect people’s lives and properties by maintaining an impeccable security posture. Rather than focusing on short-term successes, the new government plans to normalize the inter-Korean relationship based on principles and common sense, and spare no effort in ensuring the safe co-existence of people on either side.
