'Subway in Seoul'

An exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of Seoul's first subway line, remembering the history of the capital's subways.

The opening ceremony of Line 1 held on Aug. 15, 1974, also marked both the 29th anniversary of national liberation. What was supposed to be a cheerful event turned into a tragic occasion after first lady Yuk Young-soo was killed an hour earlier in an assassination attempt on President Park Chung-hee.

After the country in 1981 won the right to host the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics, construction of subway lines in the capital gained momentum. The exhibition shows the history of Lines 2, 3 and 4, all three of which were opened in 1984.
